LULL BEFORE THE STORM -- IS IT ? ? ?
Trading levels – 20th / 24th FEBRUARY 2016
WE DID SPEND LAST TWO WEEKS IN A VERY TIGHT NIFTY RANGE OF 8712 / 8826 EXCEPT FOR THE LAST DAY WHEN WE SUDDENLY BROKE OUT OF THAT RANGE FOR A BRIEF PERIOD ONLY TO END INSIDE THE RANGE.
On Friday… we witnessed an unique event when HDFC BANK - a heavyweight in BANKNIFTY and NIFTY as well was allowed to be bought by FIIs on a normal trading window. This created havoc on trading screens as HDFC BANK opened 10 % higher than previous day’s close and traded volumes even bigger than the average full day volumes of sister exchange BSE.
Both NIFTY and BANKNIFTY futures opened way higher but at a significant discount to spot rates and that situation persisted for nearly half a day. The normalcy returned when RBI announced that FIIs can not buy any more HDFC BANK shares on Indian exchanges.
I feel this situation should have been managed in a much better and systematic / orderly manner by trading suspended for the stock for 2 hours and only the buyers and sellers should have been allowed to put in their binding bids. After this session was over, the normal trading could have resumed with usual 15 minute cool-off period.
The buy and sell bids then could have been matched and results announced by end of the day on first come first served basis considering the exact time at which bids were entered.
THIS COULD HAVE AVOIDED THE FREE FOR ALL DRAMA WHICH WE WITNESSED YESTERDAY.
As regards to regular trading in last 2 weeks, market is awaiting some cues from state elections. Before that, we will have a trailer as Maharashtra civic body election results will be out on 23rd February. THIS INCLUDES MAJOR RESULTS OF MUMBAI MUNICIPAL CORPORATION whose budget is in fact bigger than a few smaller states.
So hold your breath and wait for the drama to unfold later this week. IT WILL BE PRUDENT NOT TO TRADE FOR NEXT FEW DAYS.
As I always say, we have to play percentages to make money. Bold bravado or blind consensus following does not help. I HAVE JUST GIVEN YOU SOME FOOD FOR YOUR GREY CELLS. WHAT DO YOU SAY ? ? ?
