MOODYS OBLIGES MODI ….. BUT WILL THAT MAKE HIM A HEADSTRONG REFORMER OR A POPULIST LEADER ? ? ?
Trading levels – 20th / 24th November 2017
This Friday morning was probably the most pleasant morning for MODI / SHAH duo since 16th may 2014 – the day of election verdict. MOODYS HAD UPGRADED INDIA’S SOVEREIGN RATING TO BAA2 – STABLE OUTLOOK FROM BAA3 – POSITIVE OUTLOOK. This upgrade came after 13 long years.
How much we should read into this upgrade ? In 2004, we had BBB rating – which was JUNK category. This was not investment grade. Naturally, hardly any FIIs could invest in INDIA. SO THIS MOVE - FROM JUNK CATEGORY BBB TO INVESTMENT GRADE BAA3 - WAS A PARADIGM SHIFT. This time, the impact will be much muted. AT BEST – WE MAY HAVE SOME 25/30 BASIS POINT RELIEF WHEN WE TRY TO BORROW FROM OVERSEAS SOURCES.
The markets showed a huge surge on Friday in first half an hour. However … there was no follow-up buying and the gains were moderated by the end of the day.
THIS WAS NOT REALLY A GOOD OMEN FOR THE BULLS. I expect markets to get into slow grinding mood with negative bias from Monday onwards - slowly moving towards 10,000 NIFTY or even lower.
Later in the evening, crude again made a dash beyond 62 dollars along with increase in other precious metals - which is not exactly a good news for the market.
BUT, THE BIGGEST RISK TO THE MARKET IS MODI’S MOOD. After getting the upgrade, he may suddenly become an adamant headstrong reformer and try to become a populist leader in other areas because of election compulsions. HE MAY THROW CAUTION TO THE WIND AS FAR AS FRBM IS CONCERNED BY ANNOUNCING A SLEW OF POPULIST MEASURES TO SATISFY CERTAIN VOTE BANKS. This could hurt industry and honest tax paying middle class no end.
Both the gaps in the NIFTY daily chart – 10237 / 10240 and 10104 / 10124 were filled last week. Negative divergences on MACD and money flow charts are still suggesting further correction hence I feel confident of the slide again – this time below 50DMA and towards 10,000.
As I always say, we have to play percentages to make money. Bold bravado or blind consensus following does not help. I HAVE JUST GIVEN YOU SOME FOOD FOR YOUR GREY CELLS. WHAT DO YOU SAY ? ? ?
