FESTIVE SEASON BONANZA BY  RBI BUT BULLS PULL THE PUNCHES --- WHY ?

Trading levels –5^th / 9^th  October   2015

RBI Governor  came out -  ALL GUNS BLAZING - on 29^th September .  50 BASIS POINTS RATE CUT WITH EXTREME DOVISH COMMENTARY.

GOVERNOR Rajan killed two birds in one shot …… He played to the gallery and also satisfied the political masters. NOW HE CAN SIT BACK AND RELAX FOR NEXT 4 / 6 MONTHS AS POLITICAL BOSSES AND THE INDUSTRY CAPTAINS EAT THE HUMBLE PIE WHEN THEY REALISE THAT IT WAS NOT THE RATES WHICH WAS HOLDING BACK THE INDIAN JUGGERNAUT.  If the economy really gallops – he can always take credit . So he had nothing to lose.

Suddenly the market - which was only expecting 25 basis point rate cut – was hit by a thunderbolt from Dr Rajan.   Market  is still trying to comprehend the real meaning behind the big move by RBI. Is Dr Rajan really convinced that the inflation is finally tamed and it is time he should focus on growth  or is it that he wants to score a brownie point with people who are gunning for him for being too conservative.

Dr rajan also chided bankers and the government for transmission of the rate cut and this time SBI took the cue and dropped the PLR by 40 basis points next day. The most other PSU and Private sector lenders have followed suit.

Now the interest rate bar is set lower and if there is no corresponding pick-up in credit off-take, all these banks will stand to lose substantially in the coming quarters as NIMs will take a knock.

I am watching previous swing high level of NIFTY 8055 with great interest. Bulls have to show courage and gumption to clear that level decisively. If they dither … the bears will again grab the initiative and we will head lower  - back to 7800 or even lower.

Earning season is starting in couple of days and that also will play a role in deciding the tone.

As I always say, we have to play percentages to make money. Bold bravado or blind  consensus following  does not help.  I HAVE JUST GIVEN YOU SOME FOOD FOR YOUR GREY CELLS.   WHAT DO YOU SAY ? ? ?
